our proud FILIPINO KABAYANS who make their famous spotlight around the globe

THE TOP 10 FILIPINOS WHO BECOME
FAMOUS AROUND THE GLOBE

Filipinos have always made their marks wherever they go around the world, whichever field they would take. Whether they’d be half or full-blooded Filipinos, it doesn’t really matter—they would still have that courageous blood of Rizal in their veins and their achievements would make millions of Filipinos around the globe proud. So since many have already made their marks, I have compiled a list of famous Filipinos that deserve a Hall of Fame Award, Filipino version.

1.Lea Salonga
Who else deserves the highest spot in this list but the very talented and always humble singer-actress that won the hearts of many people all around the world with her compelling voice. She’s the voice behind Kim in Miss Saigon, Mulan, and many other famous musical films.

2.Charise Pempengco
Her fame as one of the most watched in Youtube and most Googled young Filipina singer, may be instantaneous but she sure does deserve the second to the highest spot. She is the girl that has the voice as powerful as that of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, and fortunate enough to be able to sing together with the latter.

3.Manny Pacquiao—I would dare say that no one in this planet would not know the phenomenal and undefeated Pinoy boxer. His fights never fail to calm the rebels and unite all the Filipinos as well as other nationalities all over the world. When its Pacquiao's fight, its like the world would from revolving on its axis and everything would freeze.

4.Carlo Ocab
I’m a blogger and I would always be proud of this now 15-year-old Filipino blogger who topped and still holds the crown in the most competitive keyword in the internet marketing world, “make money online’’. He started blogging, or atleast being noticed at the age of 13. Wow! His skills only prove that in every work, age doesn’t really matter. And in every field, Filipinos could always excel.

5.Dave Batista, Jr.
Or simply Batista, wrestling fans would always associate his name with one of the best the world has ever have. He may be half-Filipino but he sure do have the skills that every Pinoy could always be proud of.

6.Jasmine Trias
She might have not made it to the top 3 but she has been one of the most influential Filipino-American Idol ever even to the extent that Hawaii even declared a day for her. Her votes could have made her the mayor of her town! She’s undeniably talented and sweet.

7.Vanessa Hudgens
The High School Musical sweetheart and rumored to have auditioned for the teen-thriller, Twilight, for the role of Leah. Needless to say she’s beautiful, talented and very charming.

8.Kiwi Camara—at the age of 19, he was the youngest and one of the brightest law graduate from Harvard. Not much was written about this amazing young man but he was able to prove Filipinos are very intellectual.

9.Nicole Scherzinger—lead singer of Pussy Cat Dolls. Very beautiful, astounding and talented. She deserves a place in the Filipinos Hall of Fame.

10.Arnel Pineda—The Journey,The Voice. Very amazing indeed. After many years of searching for their lead singer, the group has found their man in Arnel. His voice is like no other.

our native language TAGALOG is the fastest growing language in CANADA

Philippines-based Tagalog is the fastest-growing language in Canada, with 64 per cent more Canadians calling it their first choice for conversations at home in 2011 compared with five years earlier.
Nearly 279,000 Canadians said they speak Tagalog more than other languages at home, according to Statistics Canada language data from the 2011 census. That’s up from about 170,000 in 2006 and makes the Filipino language the fifth most common non-official language spoken in Canadian households. Punjabi and Chinese languages are the most common.
At the same time, the Philippines looks poised to play a greater role in Canadian foreign policy. In June, the federal government signed a memorandum of understanding with Manila to establish a joint commission for bilateral co-operation. And Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to visit the Philippines in mid-November after his week-long trip to India.
The trip is “mainly to talk about [how to] expand our economic co-operation,” Philippines ambassador Leslie Gatan said, adding his country’s government is eager to work with Canada on defence and agriculture, among other areas of interest.
The recent spike in the use of Tagalog at home closely matches broader immigration patterns that have seen the Philippines surpass both India and China and become the biggest source country for permanent residents in 2010 and 2011.
“The word has spread around that Canada is some kind of a promised land,” Mr. Gatan said in an interview. “Filipinos used to flock to America because the U.S. is our mother country, our former colonizer, but have discovered there’s a better pasture north of the United States.”
Economic growth in Western Canada has created a wealth of new opportunities for Filipinos, he said, and many new immigrants are travelling to Edmonton, Winnipeg and Regina for jobs. Tagalog is now the most common immigrant home language in Edmonton and the second most common in Calgary, after Punjabi.
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba all signed memorandums of understanding with the Philippines in recent years in a bid to fill labour shortages in those provinces. “Western provinces are very aggressive,” Mr. Gatan said. “They go to the Philippines, they hold job fairs there and they recruit.”
Manitoba NDP MLA Ted Marcelino grew up in the Philippines and moved to Winnipeg in 1980 after a brief stay in Toronto. He said many of the newcomer Filipinos who choose Winnipeg have family members already living in the city who can help them adjust. “Those who are newcomers usually end up in the service industry at first, and they eventually proceed to their own line of work,” he said.
Vancouver has one of the largest Canadian populations of Tagalog speakers, with 47,600 reporting to Statistics Canada that it was their primary language at home in 2011. Maria Aurella Sareal, who moved to the city from the Philippines two years ago, said she and her husband consciously speak Tagalog around their six-year-old daughter so she won’t forget the language.
“As much as we can, we’re trying to keep our native language at home, especially for my daughter’s sake,” she said.
Last summer, the Philippines embassy held trial Tagalog classes in Ottawa, and Mr. Gatan said he hopes to expand the program to other cities next year in response to parents’ concerns that their children will forget how to speak the Filipino language.

First Filipino-Canadian Appointed to Senate of Canada

proud to be pinoy

8 September 2012 - Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced on September 07 the appointment of Filipino-Canadian Tobias C. Enverga Jr. to the Senate of Canada effective immediately.
Senator Enverga was one of five distinguished Canadians joining the 105-seat Senate of Canada where they are expected to serve until the age of 75.   Senator Enverga fills one of two vacant seats for Ontario while the rest of the quintet will represent Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
"I look forward to working with these talented individuals," the Prime Minister stated. "Their skills and experience will help to further advance our shared goals of jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for all Canadians."
Prior to his appointment, Senator Enverga was a project manager at the Bank of Montreal, where he has worked for more than 30 years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Letran College in the Philippines, a Masters Certificate in Project Management from the Schulich School of Business at York University, and a Computer Studies Certificate from Centennial College.
Mr. Enverga has been involved in various organizations and a number of charitable projects. He is the first Filipino-Canadian elected in the City of Toronto, and served as Trustee to the Toronto Catholic District School Board. He is Co-Chair of the Asian Heritage Month Celebration for the Greater Toronto Area and was previously a Director of the Canadian Multicultural Council - Asians in Ontario.  He is also the founder of the Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation and a former president of the Philippine Independence Day Council.  In 2012, Mr. Enverga was the recipient of the Queen's 60th Diamond Jubilee medal of distinction.
Within the Filipino community in Toronto, Mr. Enverga is known for his active involvement in charitable projects in the Philippines which include medical missions, building schools, churchers and artesian wells, funding livelihood training programs, and supporting Bantay Bata and GK Villages in Camarines Norte and Quezon City.  For his exceptional contribution to reconstruction, progress and development in the Philippines, Mr. Enverga was conferred the Linkapil Award by the Office of the President in 2008.
"The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa hails the appointment of Senator Enverga together with Filipino communities across Canada.  Slowly but surely, Filipino excellence continues to gain recognition in the highest echelons of Canadian officialdom.  We hope that his appointment will inspire other Filipino-Canadians to achieve their own high aspirations in this welcoming land of opportunity," remarked Philippine Ambassador to Canada Leslie B. Gatan. END
