Filipino street food a big hit in Australia

Can anyone ever forget the smell of the Pinoy “inihaw”? Luckily for Filipinos living overseas, Filipino food is being offered more frequently across the globe. In fact, a newly opened restaurant grill has taken Pinoy streetfood and barbecues to Adelaide, South Australia.
A Filipino-owned and aptly named establishment, “Kalye”
(Filipino for street), serves all of the quintessential Pinoy’s favorites: sisig, kwek kwek, tocilog, liempo, and many more.
Kalye” opened in late April and all four of its owners spent time in the Philippines before starting the restaurant in Adelaide. “All of us grew up in the Philippines before we met in Australia, we used to reminisce about streetfood back home. These elements we put together at Kalye,” Ria Mcavaney, one of the restaurant’s
four owners, tells GMA News Online.
With its understated décor and a “tatak Pinoy” menu comprised of inasal, chicken and pork BBQ with cassava and halo-halo for dessert, it has attracted notable personalities like Masterchef Australia’s Jessie Spiby, local celebrity chef Dennis Leslie, the executive chef of Hill of Grace and as well as some local and national football players.
The café, jointly owned by Edralin Garcia, Joey Fernandez, Darlene Fernandez and Mcaveney, promises to take anyone on a gastronomic journey to the Philippines whether you’re a curious Aussie up for something new or a Filipino who misses good ol’ Pinoy food.

CNN, Bloomberg TV launch testament to strong PHL economy

Global media giants CNN International and Bloomberg Television have set up headquarters in the Philippines, a signal that international businesses see the Philippine economy as a strong market.
CNN Philippines launched in mid-March as the new predominantly English 24-hour free-to-air news channel and website.
Bloomberg Television Philippines is scheduled to launch in 2015 as the first 24-hour business news channel in the Philippines.
CNN International’s partnership with Nine Media Corporation rebranded 9TV into CNN Philippines which broadcasts over the RPN free television nationwide network.
CNN Philippines operates out of Manila and offers both international and local news, current affairs, documentaries and feature programming.
CNNPhilippines.com offers news, sports and entertainment, science and technology, business, exclusive interviews, special reports, opinion and analysis, and videos.
CNN Worldwide’s President Jeff Zucker said of the partnership, “We are confident the Filipino audience is going to embrace CNN Philippines and the unmatched news and information it delivers – something not seen in this country before.”
Bloomberg Television announced its partnership with local pay-TV media company Cignal Digital TV in late March.
Bloomberg Television Philippines will present programming in English with several hours of unique local daily content supplemented by Bloomberg’s programming to create a new 24/7 premium business news channel.
Bloomberg’s accurate and market-moving news will be available exclusively on Cignal Digital TV, a direct-to-home (DTH) satellite provider with currently 844,000 subscribers and targeting more than one million this year.
Bloomberg Television Philippines will be jointly run by Bloomberg and local free-to-air TV channel, TV5.
A Bloomberg release referred to the Philippines as one of the fastest growing, English-speaking economies in the world, making it an ideal base of operations in Asia.
Bloomberg Television Asia-Pacific Commercial Director Gary Groenheim referred to the collaboration as ideal, “The Philippines is fast becoming a premier broadcast destination because of its strong subscriber growth… Being in the third largest English-speaking country in the world will help us reach a vast new audience by combining elements of our daily global broadcast material with unique, tailor-made local content.”

The Philippines to launch own satellites by 2016

The Philippines is set to launch its first satellites by the years 2016 and 2017. These satellites will be the first Philippine micro satellites and also the first to be designed and built by Filipinos.
The Philippine satellite launch into space will be led by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The micro-satellites will be the thesis of Filipino students studying for their Masters program at Tohoku and Hokkaido universities in Japan. The universities will be directly supporting the micro-satellite creation.
DOST says the microsatellites will primarily boost the country’s weather detection technology, disaster management and forest protection, among many other uses.
Diwata, officially the PHL-Microsat-1, is one of the two microsatellites that are part of DOST’s Philippine Scientific Earth Observation Micro-Satellite (PHL-Microsat) Program.
Diwata is set to be launched by 2016 while its successor, PHL-Microsat-2 will be launched in 2017.
DOST secretary Marciano Montejo believes that being in control of our own tools will bring about many advantages saying, “Having our own receiving station and satellite will be a departure from our present set-up, where we rely on third-party service providers and commercial vendors to provide satellite space imagery along with interpretation.”
According to the Montejo, a receiving station for satellite data is already in the works. “We are still developing the tools. But it’s a program that has already been approved by our president,” Montejo shares.
Earlier reports indicate the Diwata will be controlled from a ground station based in Subic Freeport named Philippine Earth Data Resources Observation (PEDRO) Center.
A research lab at UP Diliman will have direct access to information from the receiving station to help develop improvements on the micro-satellite program.
The DOST secretary also disclosed that the project will amount to over 800 million pesos.
The program is also supported by the Japan Space Exploration Agency (JAXA). Ten Filipino students will be trained to create and operate the micro-satellites.

Good News mga kabayan Free WiFi for 99% of the Philippines by 2016

Free WiFi access for 99 percent of the Philippine archipelago by 2016 has been projected by the Department of Science and Technology.
The Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places project was announced by DOST Secretary Mario Montejo on the opening day of the 2015 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) in July.
DOST release states the project targets to provide Internet connectivity services in 967 Class 3, 4, 5,and 6 municipalities and key cities nationwide. This will be made available in public places such as parks, plazas, schools, rural health units and government hospitals.
“Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places strives to enable Filipinos to harness the vast potential and benefits of having consistent Internet connectivity to improve their lives and assist in bringing the country toward progress,” Montejo announced.
“First of all, Internet connection is capable of opening new markets for micro, small, and medium enterprises. It can also help the Mang Juans and Aling Marias who live in far-flung areas to reach basic government services. In addition, Internet connectivity also helps improve education,” Montejo added.
Quezon City Memorial Circle, Quezon City Hall, PHILCOA, Social Security System, and LTO in Quezon City and Rizal Park in Manila started to get free Internet access as part of an alpha launch test of Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places to help DOST’s Information and
Communications Technology Office (ICT Office) to assess the system and make the necessary adjustments before rolling out the project on a larger scale.
ICT Office expected a maximum number of 4,550 concurrent Internet users for the recent pilot test, but is prepared to provide for and maintain the speed and connection quality for up to 117,000 users by the second quarter of 2016.
The network will implement a blacklist system to block potentially harmful and destructive websites to keep information secure.

CHRIS BROWN PROMOTER RELEASED ON BAIL

    Manila, Philippines

Canadian John Michael Pio Roda, the controversial promoter of international star Chris Brown was granted temporary liberty today after the Bureau of Immigration decided to approve the petition for bail submitted by his lawyer.

Roda has been under Immigration custody after a Filipino firm, Maligaya Development Corporation, filed a complaint against him for allegedly defrauding them US$ 1 million. Roda is also held for working without the appropriate working visa and is also accused of being an undesirable alien.

Bureau of Immigration spokesperson Elaine Tan says Roda’s counsel, Atty. Raymond Fortun, requested for the promoter’s bail last July 24. The BI approved the bail petition last August 11 shortly after Fortun posted a 50,000 peso cash bond for and on behalf of Roda.

Consequently, BI has placed Pio Roda’s name in the Hold Departure List and has maintained custody of his Canadian passport.

As a condition on his release, Pio Roda is required to appear to the BI’s Intelligence Division every first Monday and third Monday of the month.

BI TO ISSUE NEW ACR I-CARD DESIGNS
    BEGINNING THURSDAY
Manila, Philippines---The Bureau of Immigration (BI) will issue ACR I-Cards with the new, color-coded design shall be issued beginning Thursday, July 16, 2015.
The new design, with specific colors designated for particular visa types, shall be microchip-embedded, and with added security features to protect against fraud.
Pursuant to Operations Order No. SBM-2015-017, the new ACR I-Cards will be issued in ten different colors to represent the various visa categories issued by the BI, i.e.,

    Visa Category
    Assigned Color
    Permanent Resident
    Light Yellow
    Native Born
    Bronze
    Special Non-Immigrant
    Dark Purple
    Worker
    Blue
    Probationary Resident
    Light Purple
    Voluntary Registrant
    Red
    Tourist
    White
    Student
    Aqua Blue
    Treaty Trader
    Gray
    Gratis
    Green

BI Commissioner Siegfred Mison said that the new design intends to facilitate immigration processing, both at the airports and the BI offices. The color codes will help identify various types of visas even from afar. All information encoded in the cards will likewise be accessible at the airports (initially at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport) through the updated Border Control Information System (BCIS).
With the new design, visa holders need not bring along the documents to support the issuance of the ACR I-Cards because all information shall be encoded in the microchip. The design will also state additional, key information such as the name of the school (for student visa), the name of the company (for work visa), and the Special Security Registration Number (SSRN)—a unique number assigned to every registered foreign national.

BUREAU BEEFS UP IMMIGRATION SERVICE AT NAIA3

    “Better waiting periods after plan

    implementation”

Manila, Philippines, July 3, 2015---Bureau of Immigration (BI) spokesperson Elaine Tan says that they will implement a new deployment plan at the airport counters to avoid a repeat of the horrendous long queues which happened at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 3 (NAIA3) last Thursday morning.
Effective July 1, the Bureau implemented a new personnel deployment scheme in NAIA 3 with 7 shifts instead of the usual 3 shifts based on the expected volume of passengers. While July 1 was a transition period, all passengers were timely cleared and none missed their flights due to long immigration lines.
With the new plan, expect a better waiting period at the counters, assures Tan.
Tan admitted that the bureau failed to anticipate the unusual spike in tourist departures that day. Reports show that the long queue began at around 5 am when only eight Immigration Officers were left to process a total of 1,767 passengers for 11 flights.
“More and more tourists are coming in and out of our country.  For us at the bureau of Immigration, this adds to the challenge. In spite of our numbers, we will ensure a more efficient deployment of our people so that we are responsive to the increasing demands at the counters. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this incident may have caused to the travelers. We request for your kind understanding and consideration,” said Tan.
Bureau chief Siegfred Mison have called on the terminal head and the duty supervisor for their explanation as to why they failed to manage the queue.
“We are still getting all the facts from terminal head Chem Siguan and the duty supervisor. We apologize for this temporary inconvenience AND firmly commit to the public that such events, if inexcusable, will not happen again considering that we are MAXIMIZING the number of immigration inspectors during peak hours,” Mison adds.
Due to the limited number of immigration officers, those assigned at the arrival counters are directed to augment the workforce at the departure area whenever possible. “However, due to the heavy passenger density at the arrival area, the scheme was not possible,” added Tan.
Despite the limited resources, BI promised the public that the same incident will not happen again. The BI has formulated a new schedule to maximize its workforce during peak hours, by adjusting the duty shifts to seven instead of the existing four shifts, with overlaps between shifts.
BI likewise reminded the traveling public to be at the airport at least three hours before their estimated departure time, and must be cleared at the immigration inspection at least 45 minutes before boarding time.
“Our immigration officers call out passengers whose flights are about to depart, so it is best to approach the immigration duty supervisor if we know that we are about to be late,” advised Tan.”
